Step bits are cone-shaped bits with graduated diameters. They are especially useful for clean holes in thin sheet metal, plastic, electrical boxes, and panels. Instead of swapping bits repeatedly, you can enlarge a hole one step at a time. They are not intended for thick steel or deep solid wood.

Tile and glass bits for fragile surfaces

Ceramic tile, porcelain, glass, and mirrors require specialty bits with spear-shaped carbide or diamond cutting surfaces. The goal is controlled grinding, not aggressive cutting. Use low speed, light pressure, and no hammer setting.

Avoid using impact mode with delicate bits, tile bits, and many hole saws. The repeated impacts can crack fragile materials, damage cutting edges, and make a clean hole harder to control. For precision work, a drill with an adjustable clutch and variable speed gives you more control.

Good bits still need good technique. Mark the center point clearly, and use a center punch on metal to keep the bit from wandering. For large holes, begin with a smaller pilot hole unless the bit design says otherwise. This lowers strain on the drill and improves accuracy.
